I'm already depressed with social anxiety and migraines and slightly paranoid. If I inherit that illness it'll be the end of me.

  1. Even if a relative has it, your chances of developing it are very small. The paranoia could easily be a symptom of the anxiety. I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.

No, there is no cure for it, but for many people, it is well-controlled by medication. Some people even learn to live happily with it unmedicated.

  2. I can tell you about in my family.... my great-grandmother had it, and then my Father had it. So in our case, it seems to be skipping a generation. however, I have a cousin that has it too. There is no CURE for it yet, but there are medications that can help a LOT. If you are worried, talk to a psychiatrist about it. They will get you the help you need. And the earlier you deal with it, the easier it is to handle.

  3. It's like poison ivy don't touch your relative or your doomed.  No it increases your risk, but ultimately their is no conclusive way to diagnose it, and no conclusive formula to know you will also inherit it.

  4. How old are you?  Because schizophrenia is pretty apparent by age 20.  Also about your relative, if the relative is a parent, there is a 50 percent chance of any offspring inheriting it.  If it is a more distant relative, the chances are much much lower.  I do not know how functional your relative with schizophrenia is, but I have met many phenomenal, successful, men and women with schizophrenia that -held down jobs, got married, had children, etc.  I find that schizophrenics in all do better than bipolar.  Bipolar's are the ones in and out of the hospital, not schizophrenics.  I do not think that bipolar's are sicker people, I think that bipolar's are less likely to be med compliant, and lack more insight about their illness in general.  There is no cure for schizophrenia, all that can be done is to manage the symptoms.  Most people who have schizophrenia know when they are being paranoid, and know when they are hallucinating, sometimes they don't know they are delusional, but do accept it when you tell them.  Many are well for long periods of time, even years without illness

  5. its not that there is no cure, you just really need to be properly medicated, and have the right councilling.

  6. Chances are you probably won't get it.  I'd say 1 in 8.  I have it and so do three of my cousins.  I also had depression, anxiety, and paranoia and I've overcome it all.  So don't give up no matter what your diagnosis is.  See a good psychiatrist and pray.  Good luck to you.
