Hi all. I am interested in building my daughter's library and came across the scholastic book club www.homeclubs.scholastic.com. The flyer doesn't really describe the terms and conditions of the offer and would like to know once I recieve the intial books what the shipping & handleing costs are... and what my future purchase committement is? Thanks!

  1. I did this several years ago when my kids were small. I went to www.scholasticbooks.com and registerd as a teacher who homeschooled. I then got same book fliers that teachers send home to their classes with the same perks (being able to earn free books with each purchase) there was no shipping cost and we got great books at a great discount, things may have changed some but I hope that helps.

  2. I can't thumbs up yet, I am new, but I have to say, Wilmadee (?) said everything I would say and more.

  3. I did that in elementary school!  Just pick out what books you'd like to purchase, and send the order form and check with her to school to give to her teacher (or can you order online now?  it's been a while since elementary school...) but either way, you purchase some books this time around, next time you don't neccessarily have to order and purchase books.  but if you do, and you haven't ordered in a while, you can still order!  it's really nice!  i don't know about shipping and handling... we ordered the books through the school and my teacher passed the books out to me.  there are also "book clubs" for series of books that come with little toys and knick knacks that you can cancel you subscription to whenever you please.  those i am sure had a shipping and handling cost.  i bet if you place an order it will calculate the costs for you when you determine how you wish the books to be sent (like all other online orders)  don't worry, scholastic books is an honest, fair company.  they even do book fairs at elementary schools where your child can take money and purchase books, pencils, bracelets, erasers, small stuffed animals that are promotions for books and all that kind of fun stuff!  it's a great club!

  4. I have experience with this through daycare- my children bring home flyers. Through daycare we do not pay shipping and handling, and you can get some really affordable books. With the home program, I am unsure of shipping. It is a great program, though.

  5. Your best bet from scholastic is to get them through the teacher club . . . no minimum purchases, no shipping and handling, and you earn points on your purchases.

Call scholastic (1-800-SCHOLASTIC) and ask to have catalogs sent to you as a homeschooling parent representing a homeschool group (I am and do).  Give them an address and ask how to verify that you are a homeschooler.  (It took an additional phone call for us, no big deal.)

The catalogs to probably request are: Honeybee (0-4 years), Firefly (Preschool), SeeSaw (K-1) and Click (Software, some movies, etc.).  In addition, this website has coupon codes that you can put into when ordering online with Scholastic Book Clubs http://www.proteacher.net/discussions/sh...

You can find the codes for the month and with a $20 purchase, you get an additional $10 free books that month.  (A great deal!)

If they want to know how many you need, tell them about 5-10 each.  In a month or so you will get the catalogs in the mail.  There are great value libraries in them and you have complete control over what you order.

(Homeschool preschool is basically just working on basics with her, and since I am sure you do this, you will qualify.)

Some other great ways to build a youngster's library are:

Garage sales, 2nd hand (goodwill) thrift stores (we love savers, if you have one there near you), ask on freecycle (freecycle.org to find a group near you), ebay, and craigslist.

    Good luck and Happy Reading!

  6. My kids bring forms for scholastic books home from school. I generally buy them a book or two. They have great deals and it helps the school add books to their library.

  7. Scholastic books are great. You can order one book now and none later, or whatever. Normally, teachers will send the book orders home once a month. You can get real nice books for great prices. You just pay the cost on the order form.
