Scholorship essay topic?

Question

What is an important yet relatively simple issue to write a 750 essay on that involves science, technology, or health? The format is as if it were being sent to the president. This is for a scholorship and is on extremely short notice!

The ethics of progress.  You could compare and contrast the ethical philosophical issue of the progress of controversial science (stem cells, AI, weapon engineering) vs the overall benefit to the society.  Can or should a great benefit outweight the social cost?
