School's starting on September 2nd and I'm going to grade 8 and I stutter. We're probably going to be asked to stand up and say our name, that's the hard part! I'm not worried about School Assignments,projects,etc... I got all of that covered. My problem is Presentations, speaking aloud in class,etc...

I took Speech Therapy Classes in Grade 7,and it gave no improvement in my speech.

What do I do?!

  1. practice your introduction, practicing will help you not to stutter, and it will make you less nervous

keep in mind: many teachers like to have you say a movie you saw over the summer or something about yourself along with your name to help break the ice - so practice that too

  2. Interesting, my son had the same problem in the same grade. He did go to speech in the 7th grade as well, and again in the 8th. He worried at first what people would think, he is usually confindent. It helped him tremendously! He rarely stutters now at all. Keep going and if you are not improving, try a new therapist, but he did use the practice techniques often. Unfortunalty his therapist, Mrs. Contois, was killed in a paint ball accident on her son's birthday. They were celebrating at a paint ball park and her son's tank/seal must have exploded hitting her in the head and killed her istantly. Freak accident, terrible especially at her son's bday in front of him, but everyone will miss her, she helped so many students. He would stutter in compromising situations, usually when yelled at, excited or nervous. He is doing well now, graduated High School, rarely does it at all. Keep going or get an outside therapist to help.  He was popular, outgoing and really wanted to do something about it, you really have to want it and not worry about what people think of you going!

  3. Just relax, everyone has flaws. If you are worried about your stutter and think about it, it will only make things worse. Be calm when you say your name, and just pretend no one is in the room with you. Keep taking your Speech Therapy Classes and im sure you will improve.  If you want you could even practice saying your name or giving a presentation. Hope this helps :]

  4. don't worry!!

cause no matter what i don't think that trying to cover up your stutter is the best coarse of action.  just try your best to speak in a calm tone, and address your speech problem or something so it doesn't seem  to sudden.  but i kind of know what you mean, even though i don't have anything wrong with my speech, every time i simply try to speak in front of people i don't know too well, like presentations and stuff, i take shorter and shorter breathes until it sounds like i'm coughing up an organ!!! its not fun, and i tried al ot of things, but anyway as long as you feel relaxed and comfortable all is right ^_^

  5. Try your best. Speak slowly to prevent stuttering. I hope it goes well!

Have an awesome first day of 8th grade!
