Question:

School Attendance Issue?

I don't know, I've been sick a lot lately and have been missing a lot of school. It's not that I don't want to go to school (Okay, I actually DON'T want to go)-- but no, I don't miss school because of that.

But really, I miss SO much school. In every two weeks, I miss at least 2-3 days. And I've only been at this school for one quarter (half a semester). So far, I haven't had a severe problem with the district or anything but I don't want anything to lead to that.

But I don't know what to do. I'm still okay with the schoolwork-- but I dont want to get transfered to another school or something like that because of attendance.

Sorry if this question makes no sense.

  1. What grade are you in? In high school, you usually fail classes automatically if you miss a certain number of days--around fifteen. In college, you can be dropped from a class if you miss just one day. Every district has a different attendence policy, and if you're really concerned that you might be forced to transfer or repeat a grade, talk to a principal or counselor--they should be able to tell you whether you're fine, or if there's a problem. Good luck!

  2. in our school system (Florida), a kid can have 18 days unexcused absence and then they get held back a year.  if they keep being absent and there's no real reason, their parents have to go to court and pay money to the court every month, like $15 a month, which adds up after a year.  they also take away any welfare/social security benefits that a parent gets for having a school-aged child.

  3. So, why exactly are you missing school? Is there a legitimate reason? Do your parents know that you are missing school this much?

If you're not careful, you might end up looking at truancy charges. When I was in high school, we could miss 15 days with a parent's note, and after that we had to have doctor's notes. After so many  (I don't remember the exact number) absences w/o a doctor's note--the police and social services got involved...

  4. I think it depends on your state, but they could charge your parents if you miss too much school. Also it's not like a $100 charge it's like a $2,000.00 charge, so your parents might not be too happy. Maybe you should get like Independent studies or something, that way you just go once a week. I think you could handle that.
