I get bored whenever I try to work, after like the first thing I am suppose to do.. I don't know why, I just feel like I can't do it, this happens every year, I end up finishing really late, and then taking the tests to see where you stand, and scoring above my grade level.. I already had a topic on this, but only one person replied.. I would like to see some opinions.... I just want to be able to finish early, not late.. because I am homeschooled, and can....

  1. I am not so sure this is an issue with public verses homeschool. It seems to me you lack self discipline and motivation. Even if your parents will not do  a higher level with you, do you go to the library? Check out some books, think of the things that interest you and do some in depth studies, reports, projects and so forth on your own when you finish your required daily work. Build something, write a book, draw, do science experiments, start your own newspaper, write out some math problems that would take some serious thinking and time to solve and work on solving those, take on a sport, get some radio equipment and do amateur radio yourself, there are so many things you can do. Just find what you are really interested in and just dream of the things you can do, start by checking out some books in the local library or going online and getting ideas of things you might want to do!

    Good luck!!

  2. Sounds like you need a more challenging curriculum. If you are testing above grade level, why not go ahead and take that grade level course?

If you can, check into getting into your local college for some classes. We can do that where we live but I understand all states are different.

  3. I'm homeschooled too. The first homeschooling program I tried didn't go well at all because I felt just like you, I was too bored to do the work because no one was telling me to. Now I'm in a homeschooling program and it's really interactive. It has due dates for the assignments so I don't forget to do them (& tons of options so you can finish early), it has clubs for the high schools and actual classes with the teachers, etc. My school is owned by K12 (k12.com) and there are many other homeschooling programs that they own, all over the country. It just depends on the state you're in. So I suggest looking to see if you have a homeschooling program from K12 where you live, because it's a lot better.

  4. Since school itself isn't fun for you, you need to give yourself something to look forward to afterwards.

My two homeschooled teens have incentives to get their schoolwork done efficiently. My son can stay up til midnight playing videogames if he does all his work before dad gets home. My daughter can stay in bed in the morning as late as she wants, reading. These are what they like to do.

We also have other incentives when the going gets tough. Like I'll take them out to lunch or to ice cream if they get a certain amount of work done.

  5. I had the same problem when I went to public school. Once I started home schooling though I was able to move on to more challenging work and find creative wayst o make the structured, dull assignments more involved and interesting.

  6. If you asked for higher level work and your parents didn't agree, you could consider a few options.

Make yourself get to it and get it over with.  Try to get it done faster so that you can move on to something that you'd rather do.  See if you can finish this curriculum before the year's over. Show them that it really is too easy for you and that you can handle more.  (Basically, if it is taking you too long to do the work, they probably don't believe you that it's too easy.  So, you've got to work on proving it to them.)

Or, make yourself finish the work early that they give you and then do something harder, more interesting on your own afterwards.  Come up with some research projects or other more advanced work that you can do.  Work on it after doing the work that was assigned to you.  This is another way to show that the work they're giving is too easy and you can handle more.

Or, come up with your own reward system for yourself to convince yourself to buckle down and get it over with.  Promise yourself that you'll be able to do (or have) something you'd really enjoy only *after* you finish the school work.  (This is a great system to get into the habit of doing for it can help you throughout life to get through the things you don't really want to do.)

Find a hobby.  Get involved in an organization.  Volunteer (even if you don't have tranportation, you'll find that there are volunteer opportunities online, if you really search).  Figure out something to make productive use of your time.  Something that you'll want to do.  And don't let yourself work on it until you've done the schoolwork.

Personally, when I was homeschooled, I went through this, too.  I was given a week's worth of assignments at a time--a packet of assignments to complete.  I finally decided that getting it over with so that I could move on to more fun stuff was the best way.  Then my parents weren't giving me grief and I had more time to enjoy myself.  So, I decided that I'd sit down starting first thing Monday morning, and I'd work on the week's assignments until they were done.  I soon discovered that I could usually get them all done on Monday and then had the rest of the week to investigate hobbies and other fun stuff.
