Question:

School Ruins Imagination?

does anyone else believe that through school your imagination has been lost and also the skills of thinking for yourself

instead when we are to do "creative writing" we are told that it doesn't matter what it is about but it has to contain extended metaphors, similes and what not and no slang words, and we are marked on the validity of our storyline - yea sure like harry potter is actually real??

so instead of writing amazing stories like we did when we were younger you know all about dinosaurs and fairy tale creatures and the goody's and baddy's of the world, we are writing about what we did at the weekend - but adding characters to it, Sally went to the local shopping center, she found a t-shirt that shone like the suns glow and bought it

???????

oh wait sorry i am not allowed to say "it" and "t-shirt" because it is supposedly not "proper" english!!

we are also not encouraged to think for ourselves - i.e. when asked the question are drugs wrong everyone goes "yes, because they harm your health" okay some do! but no one explains that some drugs are useful, how if your stranded on a desert island and someone needs to have a surgical operation that the drug addicts stash of heroin would be very useful!

it's ridiculous

school is brainwashing us just so we can write out the same dribble in exams and this is supposedly what the examiners want to see? wheres the imagination, where's the personal touch, where is the child inside of us who wrote all those tall stories years ago and now is struggling with even the simplist of tasks

because schools don't let you imagine, the closest to thinking for yourself is if you can work out how to do a question before the teacher spends 2 lessons going over it, step by step, so why bother thinking if they're just going to tell you the answer in the end??

does anyone else have an opinion on this?

sorry it's so long

  1. i agree with you completely

my 5 year old cousin could write a better story than me because she has a better imagination

i haven't thought for myself in years - school does it for me - i just have to remember the facts!

is your example of the drugs part of charlie from lost?

    i love that show

live the way i try to, if asked a question say the opposite to what they're expecting, and think of a justifiable but quite odd response - such as "are drugs bad" - no because they keep people employed , and make people happy (for limited time but still) if someone is happy then what's wrong with that? the look on their face is priceless

somewhere in all of us is an imagination

we just need to stop school from destroying it!

  2. not really

  3. You don't have to let any entity destroy your imagination. Everywhere you go in this world, there are rules, which some would say destroy our freedoms. But that is simply not true. Without rules, we would have no order, and order is necessary for communication! Your imagination works just as well inside a prison as it does on a beach or in a classroom, so quit complaining and blaming and get your imagination fired up. There are no rules about going beyond what is expected, so use the rules to go beyond!

  4. It depends on your school. My school conducts poetry writing and story writing competitions, but again they give us topics to write on, which I do not agree with. Then again, It depends on the teachers. Our politics teacher encourages us to think a lot.

I conclude by saying that I agree partly with u.

  5. Yes your imagination does get lost. My school is a perfect example of what you just asked.

  6. all depends on the school , if yours is like you say then change it or change schools
