  1. It needs to be hard for the buses to get down the streets so if the plows don't come, your kids are in for fun!

  2. Varies by where you live,  but the snow days are there for whenever the road conditions would be excessively hazardous to travel.

  3. for us in NE Ohio, it we have to have atleast 6 in of snow or bellow freezing

  4. Its not all about the temps but the temp can play a role in it too, I personally dont want my son standing outside in freezing cold weather possibly gettin really sick just to go to school for a day... so in that case when its as cold as it is, forget it... also the roads and the safety of the children gettin there, my finace is a truck driver, its hard to even keep that handled on icy roads im sure buses have the same issues... so if your a parent you know what im taking about if your a student then think about your safety, plus I never knew a kid that didnt want a snow day

  5. Because some roads would be really bad.

  6. My school has only been closed once for the temp....it was middle school though, it was something below zero is all I know.

  7. Ok so my dad is a principal ... temperature dose play a big role in school closings but mostly in cities where there are a lot of walkers also if its to cold the buses wont even run but usually it evolves wind chill and its below freezing with a big wind chill to make it colder... one more thing if there are no clouds the night before it will be even colder the next day because clouds act like insulation.    -peace-

  8. it depends on the school district- every one is different.

here in wisconsin, it has to be 30 below 0 or 6 inches of snow.

  9. Why do we have snow days?

Because there are certain weather conditions that are unsafe to be driving on. It isn't the temperature persay that causes a snow day, it's the slippery roads that are dangerous for buses with children, or any vehicle for that matter. No one wants bus-loads of children to be put in a situation that is preventable such as a bus slipping on ice or snow. To some extent, schools are reliable for the safety of the students. What if a bus-load of children got killed because a bus tipped over on the ice. Why risk these scenarios when you can keep the children at home?

  10. Well schools usually close due to ice, not snow. If the snow is hard to drive thru, then schools will most likely close. There isn't a certain temperature either, just as long as they think the conditions will not improve :)

  11. well you usually need to have a lot of snow (probably a few inches) for the buses not to run i don't think it really depends on the temperature outside

  12. the school doesn't want lawsuits when the bus flips over on ice, and little johnny eats the frozen pavement.  they'd rather take the day off, and make it up at the end of the year.

sometimes it closes because its too cold for people who walk

  13. its not the temperature, it's whether the roads are frozen or not because it's extremely dangerous for school buses to drive on frozen roads.

freezing temperature is 32F so if there's moisture in the air, maybe the roads will freeze!

I hope they do so you can get a snow day!

  14. Buses stop running when the weather conditions make it dangerous to drive in.  Excessive snow, freezing rain, and blowing white-out conditions satsify that "dangerous" term.  -20*C when your homework isn't done, doesn't count.

  15. Depends on where you live. I guess if you live in Fairbanks, Alaska, they would shut down at 50 below zero!

  16. It's probably not a temperature issue, snow and hazardous road conditions are the usual reasons for a snow day. The only way temperature would be an issue is if they failed to winterize the fuel (un-winterized diesel fuel turns into wax gel at cold temps), or maybe if temps drop below -20 degrees F. And at that point, they probably just cancel it to avoid frostbite.

  17. Buses will run in minus temperatures, so don't be getting your hopes up this really cold snap is going to keep you from going to school.

Snow days are because the snowy, wintery conditions are difficult and/or dangerous to travel in.

Each area has its own definitions.  When I lived in Vermont, there had to be blizzard, white-out conditions with snows over 6 inches.  When I lived in Connecticut, 3 inches was enough to close schools.

  18. you have to have at least 6 inches of snow on the ground.

  19. icy roads... too icy for the busses, and the schools power usually has to go out.

  20. I'm not sure of the answer to what you are asking, but there are kids that have to stand outside & wait for there bus to come. Sure, there are kids that have there parents drive them up in a heated car, & wait with them, but some people are less fortunate with parents who are unable to give them a ride up to there bus stop. Some people get showers in the morning, & go to school with wet hair. What if they are  the ones with the parents that wont ride them up? Then they are risking a cold. That was an issue at my school. Sheer quencedence? Yea, pretty much.

  21. its not really the temperture that makes a school close, its either slippery roads or to much snow on the roads.

  22. For us in Massachussets we close if the roads are icy or if theres a lot of snow. Genrally we close if we are under Winter Storm Warning from Nat'l Weather Center. We even had a cold day because the air was so cold that it could cause frostbite just waiting at the bus stops. Snow wasn't even a factor in that day off.

  23. Usually it is two inches or more of snow for school closings and buses run at all temperatures but if there is snow (2 inches) USUALLY no. Superintendent decides. mine loves snow, she makes us all go in snow days it sucks yeahhh

  24. Because maybe it would take too long for the bus to pick everyone up then go to the school, and it would depend how icy the road was.

  25. i think it should be up to the parents even if the school don't close if they think its to cold to send your child out ... don't wait tell no one else tell you .......its to cold

  26. it doesn't matter to the buses if the temp is way low, they close it because it is way to cold for kids to walk outside in the freezing weather.  especially for the kids that walk to school.

    hope that helped

  27. It's not necessarily the temperature, it depends on if there's ice on the roads, because it's unsafe for the buses, or anyone to be driving on them when they're icy.

  28. it acctually also has something to do with the busses not being able to run. When the weather is too cold, the busses CANT run. And the roads are bad.

  29. I lived in northern MN while in school they only closed school if there was a blizzard or the busses wouldn't start. We didn't get too many snow days. those busses all ways seemed to start.

  30. If the buses holding the children can't run safely on snow covered roads, then they can't run. The temperature isn't a factor although generally the snow won't stick to the pavement if it's over 32 degrees.

  31. the temp affects the buses engines...they don't run if its cold enough...the engine needs heat..and the engine freezes
