School has the right to READ DIARY??

So my RA could not find me in my dorm at the end of the year and when the ppl at the student life in college inspected the room, they happen to go through my luggage and READ my PRIVATE diary that mentioned substance use. This happened at the end of last school year and during the first week of this year, they wanted to see me because they were "concerned for my well-being." The dean of student life basically told the counseler first that either her or this guy searched through my diary and read it. I never knew that until the counseler walked in. So I have to go to counseling to keep them off my a**.

IS READING MY DIARY ALITTLE TO INVADING OF PRIVACY????

Plus they already found out about my whereabouts either within a few hours before or after the incident. I feel very pissed that they decided to humilate me by reading my own personal thoughts that we re not to be shared in that kind of manner.

Sounds like you have a really good case. Find a lawyer who will be willing to share the payoff when you sue their pants off!

It is illegal for them to go through your private things. If your diary was on your bed that's one thing. But if they were going through your personal belongings , such as you luggage that is illegal. That is an invasion of privacy. I would go to the President or the person under them and make a complaint. Also I would go to an advisor or Professor. You could also look into organization or a place on campus that helps with students rights.  

In any event I would suggest doing something about it. You don't even know for sure if they have done it before, if they're still doing it, or if they are doing it to someone else.

Yes reading the diary is invading privacy. But if some one is dare enough to read your diary, one thing is sure. There is some thing wrong with you too. You may be some one without much of a confident disposition. which make others feel that they can do anything to you and go free after that.

i didnt think it was legal for schools to read diaries!!! i know that in Ireland a teacher isn't even allowed to go through a student's bag, even if he/she suspects illaegal substances...the student has to turn the bag out themselves!!
