What is the typical age for students in Year 10? Is it the same as Grade 9 in the US? Also, how long does the school year run in New South Wales and when does a person graduate from high school? What about Victoria?

  1. In victoria year 10's will be between 15- 16

i have a friend is who has gone on exchange to america for one year and has been placed in year 10 so i am assuming that our year 10 and america's year 10 are about the same.... people are between 17 - 18 when they finish year 12 but can drop out at the end of year 10... in Victoria there is no main exam at the end of year 10 just the same as every other year of school.... and then in year 11 and 12 you have VCE(victorian certificate of education) which goes over year 11 and 12

    hope this helps

my understanding is that victoria and new south wales are very similar all through school except for that victoria has what is called prep which is a year at school before grade 1

  2. i can answer with regard to NSW, Victoria is the same, more or less.  the typical age for year 10 students is 15-16.  you can finish school at the end of year 10, or go on to years 11 and 12 - this is a must if you intend to attend university.  you graduate from high school at the end of year 12, when you are 17-18.  the school year in NSW runs from Feb-Dec from memory, with 6 weeks holiday in summer and 2 weeks holiday over easter.  there are also pupil free days.

EDIT - I went to private school and didn't get extra 2wk holiday, maybe it depends on the school.

In NSW we have an equivalent of Vic "prep" school called kindergarten.

  3. I am from NSW so I'll answer this from my experience.

The typical age groups in Year 10 in NSW is generally 15-16 year olds. School in NSW runs over four terms. Breaks between Term 1 and 2, 2 and 3 and 3 and 4 go for two weeks. The summer break between Term 4 and 1 go for about six weeks.

In Year 10, you sit for an exam called the School Certificate. Really, this is important if you're intending to drop out. In Year 12, you will then sit the Higher School Certificate (HSC) which will give you the chance to enter Uni if you get the required marks.

    Hops this helps.

  4. If you go to a private school you get an extra 2 weeks holidays at the end of each year.  Ditto on the other two answers.
