    Here is how you do the problem.

    Make one of the parts = X

    Make the other part = 1/3X

    Set up your Equation:

    X + 1/3X = 72  (Next multiply everything by 3 to get rid of fraction)

    3X + X = 216

    4X = 216        (Now divide both by 4)

    X = 54         (So one of your numbers is 54)

    1/3(54) = 18  (So your other number is 18)

    After, you should always check your answer.

    18 + 54 = 72  (So that is good)

    1/3(54) = 18   (So that is good)
