Schumacher determined to win world title with Mercedes
Seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher says he will honour his contract with Mercedes until 2013, and is aiming to win at least one title during that time.
Although Michael was heavily criticised for his performances last season, he believes that this was healthy for him. Schumacher said, “That is okay for me, I haven't looked good all the time either. I can live with criticism very well, you just have to differentiate
it and it can bring you forward as well.”
Michael Schumacher made a daring return to Formula One this season, and looked like he still had what it takes to be a champion in pre-season testing. However as the 2010 season progressed, Michael Schumacher was nowhere near the pace of the top-runners.
It was not entirely Michael’s fault, as his team admitted that the car had been designed for Jenson Button, and the seven-time world champion was not used it. Also the new tyre compounds introduced by Bridgestone were not up to the mark, and as a result
drivers like Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa struggled a lot.
However one has to wonder how Michael’s team-mate Nico Rosberg managed to produce better results than him, with a similar car. Nico finished in seventh place in the drivers' standings with 142 points, while Schumacher finished in ninth place with 72 points. It
was quite disappointing for the fans to see such a legend give the worst performance of his career to date. Michael has been a part of the sport since 1991, and even his early years were much better than this season statistically.
Nevertheless, the German driver has vowed to bounce back next season, as he believes that this time the car will be designed according to his liking, and he won’t have any excuses. He did however concede that it would be a longer term project with the team. “Fighting
for the world championship is still our goal, it can only be like this. Hey, we are Mercedes. But this is a three-year project, and even if obviously it would be nicer if it worked out sooner, we are talking about competing at the absolute peak of motorsport,”
Schumacher told the media.
The team is hoping to give a groundbreaking performance next year, and match the expectations of their fans. They want to be among the top teams like Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren next season.
The seven-time World Champion added, “What is much more important is that I deeply enjoy building what we are building here at this team, and that is always the best base for success, because you do not need to question the motivation. I can't wait already
to get the new season started.”
