Schumacher happy with initial testing of new Pirelli tyres
The Mercedes GP driver, Michael Schumacher is reportedly pleased with the initial testing of the new Pirelli tyres. After the last race of the season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, all F1 teams had their first test of the new tyres
at the Yas Marina Circuit this week. The initial test drives on Friday and Saturday seem to have made the seven times World Champion pretty optimistic for the upcoming season.
Schumacher returned to the track at the start of the 2010 season, after staying away from the sport for three years. At the end of 2006, the German driver announced his retirement only to join back three years later. Although his
return was embraced by the sport and all its fans welcomingly, the racing icon has failed to do well through the season with the same team (as Brawn GP) that won both the Driver’s and Constructor’s Championships last year in 2009.
Amongst several other reasons for his poor performance, the lack of suitability with the Bridgestone tyres was listed at the chief among them. The driver was not able to adjust well with the tyres all through the season. However,
as Formula One will be seeing a new tyre supplier, Pirelli from next year, many believe that the old racer will return to form on the track.
After having the initial tests of the 2011 rubber, the driver stated earlier today that he is happy with the tyres yet his performance depends upon how well Mercedes GP manages to modify its car according to the new Pirellis.
The driver wrapped up the 2010 Driver’s Championship in 9th place while he was only able to tally a total of 72 points. Now, as he prepares for the next season, the German anticipates a far better performance.
While talking to the media earlier today Schumacher said, “I feel that we had an interesting session. We gathered a lot of data and insights, and have positive feedback from our first impression of the new tyres. In terms of consistency,
it looked quite good but we were using the 2010 car and it will be all about how these tyres suit our 2011 car.”
He concluded saying, "I am already curious to try it out but at the same time I am looking forward to having a break now."
Moreover, the team boss Ross Brawn said the Italian tyre manufacturer has got a ‘thumbs-up’ from everyone and the Mercedes GP team is satisfied with it so far.
