Schumacher says he loved keeping Hamilton at bay in 2011 Italian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Michael Schumacher of Mercedes GP appeared very content with his fifth position finish and the challenge he put to Lewis Hamilton in the 2011 Italian Grand Prix held Sunday, September 11 at the Monza racetrack – the fastest track on Formula 1 calendar.
The seven-time champion, Schumacher is quite satisfied with his performance during the race at the Monza circuit, as he believes he did complete justice to the upgraded Mercedes car by optimising his performance to the best. It was not a very good day for
his teammate Nico Rosberg though, who was unable to finish the race successfully.
Michael Schumacher started off the race at the fourth position. Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, who secured a second place on the grid which was his fourth consecutive front row start, was seen battling with Schumacher soon after the race began and the struggle
continued until lap 10, when both the drivers were seen battling for a 3rd position in the race.
Later on, in lap 24, both Schumacher and Hamilton were seen battling for 4th position. They kept overtaking each other and enthralled the fans with their performance.
Eventually, in the 28th lap, Hamilton found his way up in the 4th position with Schumacher trying his best to pace up and close the gap.
Hamilton finally finished the race at 4th position gaining 12 points for his team while Schumacher won a 5th position and is currently at 52 points in the FIA Formula 1 2011 World Championship standings.
Schumacher said, “The fighting against Lewis was big fun, and my mirrors seemed to be very small at times. We are both known for driving on the limit, and that is what we did. I had to make my car as wide as a truck, and had to stretch the possible as much
as I could, but in the end, as expected, he was still faster.”
The 42-year-old German driver kept his fans’ adrenaline rushing with his picture-perfect performance.
The German said, “It was an exciting race today, both for me and I think for all of our fans, and that is why I am happy.”
Schumacher is very excited at the moment about all the possibilities that Mercedes can bank on in the future, and is hopeful about his team’s performance in the upcoming races with a strong Mercedes package to take advantage from.
