Schumacher’s true spirit is missing in his racing: Formula One
Michael Schumacher’s driving is not what had been expected from him this season. “Something is clearly missing”, commented David Coulthard, the former partner of the German driver who has now turned BBC analyst for the F1. He also added that the ever beloved hero of the sport, Schumacher resorted to some pretty questionable racing during the Canadian Grand Prix, in Montreal, held last weekend.
Before the season began, Coulthard strongly advised that Schumacher must be given some grace period, so that he gets accustomed to the head to head tough competition of frontline. He had been out of the track for a period of three long years, after he announced his retirement from the race. Coulthard also added that this was necessary for him to get back to his previous form, so that he could make his re-entry on the track with the same force that he had always been famous for. However, the way this season had unfolded with his one step forward and two steps backwards, the entire team is forced to admit that time is now running out and some measures are to be taken as soon as possible, or the title would become a dream for him this season.
As per Coulthard, during the Canadian Grand Prix, held last week Schumacher made several mistakes that surprised the spectators and were worth questioning him. Like at one instant, when he had a clash with Robert Kubica of the Renault team and at another time with Felipe Massa, who had been his previous Ferrari team mate as well. Also, he was found completely lost and drawn at several places like when Sebastien Buemi of Toro Russo and the two Force India drivers, Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi over took him at the later stages, thus leaving Schumacher to end the race pointless.
Martin Brundle, another former F1 driver, who had also been the team mate of this record-breaking World Champion, now works as a Formula One commentator for BBC. After the F1’s return from Canada he commented that Schumacher’s comeback which has received a lot of hype has actually been very disappointing. He added that this week’s performance had been his worse since he had returned to the race.
Last week, Dr Helmut Marko, the former racing driver, who had won thirteen Grand Prix’s and is now the Red Bull Racing consultant, wrote in his regular column for The Daily Telegraph, that it was hard to believe that the same man who had made the record of winning the Championship for seven times, is actually driving himself. He said that what was seen on the track merely looked like the shadow of this man.
He also mentioned that despite pitting three times, Schumacher still lapped over four seconds off the pace while he reached his final stint. He added that it was odd to see that he was just unable to have his tyres moving. Moreover, he said that there were several instances where he actually breached the rules as well and it was surprising why he was not questioned for that, like the collision he had with Massa, at the later laps.
He said that it was a fact that lately they have had some differences but still, he respected Schumacher and by no chance he is trying to beat up on him. However, he mentioned that he also previously advised that the former champion needed half of the season to get him settled back with the tracks and the race pressure. Now as eight races are already gone, and only eleven left, making mistakes like the ones Schumacher had made in the last Grand Prix is strange.
Well, it is hard to say what is actually wrong with him, as no fitness issues are there but still all the race lovers and especially the Schumacher’s diehard fans want to see the true star back in him in the upcoming races.
