Schwerin slips another chance to break the ice at 2012 CEV Champions League Prelims
Schwerin based German Women’s volleyball team slipped another chance to break the ice at the prelims of 2012 CEV Champions League. They hosted France’s RC Cannes on Tuesday, December 20 in the fourth leg of the round and received straight sets defeat (21-25,
20-25, 17-25).
With this particular loss, Schweriner SC fell to an overall record of 0-4. On contrary, French RC Cannes improved to 4-0 and remained in the top ranking of Pool A. Last week, French ladies sent the Germans to a 0-3 loss while playing at Cannes and repeated
the same results in the return game this week.
German mentor Teun Buijs regretted the loss of another match but appreciated the players for their effort.
He disclosed his views after the match and said, “RC CANNES used their great experience to win the big rallies and therefore the match. We are getting closer to Europe’s top teams though. All in all, SCHWERINER SC showed that they are able to match top level
teams in sequences but throughout an entire game they are still lacking experience.”
RC Cannes started the match in their usual style and hit the ball with full intensity. They scored first point of the game, while SC was yet to be on board. With a couple attacking shots, France moved up to 3-2 before the home side retaliated and got better
on the scoreboard.
The game of hit ‘n’ run officially took centre stage and both sides traded lead very often. Hosts led the scores at 13-12 and it was the last time in first set they were ahead of RC Cannes. The French came up with heavy strike of volleys and took the control
of operations. They strengthened their grip on the ball and did not allow SC to raise head again. RC Cannes rallied from 14-13 to 25-21 and seized first-set win.
German team was simply infuriated with the loss of first set. They discussed their flaws during the timeout and came up with new game plan. With the support of home audience, they put up a spirited effort in the second set and stunned the visiting squad
with immensely improved performance. They formed new combos and hit from all angles. They rallied 3-0 run and picked up a lead of 5-1. RC Cannes tried to get back on track but faced strong resistance. Nonetheless, they managed to tie the score at 11-all, which
forced the home team to call the first timeout. Following the tie of score, RC Cannes bounced back in the game and broke the rhythm of SC. Despite having a great start, SC dropped the second set with a margin of 5 points, 20-25.
Third set was all about French side. Germans scored first few points in third set but then trailed behind up till the match points. RC Cannes closed final set of the game at 25-17 and grabbed fourth consecutive win in the preliminary round-robin of 2012
CEV Women’s Champions League.
