Schweriner SC, Crvena Zvezda Beograd finish prelims of 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League winless
Out of 20 teams in the prelims of 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League, only Schweriner SC and Crvena Zvezda Beograd finished winless.
Following the competition formula, each one of them appeared in six matches but failed to break the ice.
One of the teams was mentored by Head Coach Teun Buijs, whose daughter Anne Buijs was also featured on the team roster as wing-spiker, German club team Schweriner SC. The German squad entered the European campaign under the command a new coach, who joined
the team some five months ago.
Schweriner was placed in Pool A alongside RC Cannes of France, Eczacibasi Vitra Istanbul of Turkey, and Italian MC-Carnaghi Villa Cortese.
Germans opened the tournament with home game when they hosted Turkish Eczacibasi. Despite having the advantage of familiar court and emotional support of fans, Schweriner dropped its first match to visiting Turks in a four-set match.
Next up, the team travelled to Italy and met Villa Cortese in the second match. The clouds of calamity still hovered on the German team and they received their second defeat from Italian hosts.
In the third match, Schweriner crossed its ways with the top team of Pool A, the RC Cannes of France. Playing in front of the local audience, the French side proved to be too strong for Germans and posted 3-0 victory over Schweriner.
However, the German team showed great ambition to take revenge from French opponents in the next match at home. The city of Schweriner hosted the fourth match between home team and RC Cannes. The outcome of the match remained absolutely unchanged and visitors
won the match in straight sets. Furthermore, the Italian Villa Cortese sent Germans to fifth defeat in the prelims in front of the German fans in the next match.
Schweriner gave good competition to Turkish Eczacibasi in the last match of prelims, which spanned over five tiring sets. The effort of German ladies was commendable but they failed to win the match. Schweriner SC finished the campaign with final score of
0-6.
Like Germans, the Serbian Crvena Zvezda Beograd also finished the 2012 CEV Champions League Prelims with devastating 0-6 record. Serbian team was placed in Pool E, where it was joined by Russian Dinamo Moscow, Italy’s Scavolini Pesaro, and Bank BPS Fakro
Muszyna of Poland.
Serbian ladies exhibited poor performance throughout the league round and managed to win only two frames in six matches. They played three matches at home and three games away but failed to prove their endeavours.
Both German and Serbian teams have been disqualified from the 2012 CEV Champions League after their disappointing run during the preliminaries.
