Schweriner SC wins German Women’s National Cup – Volleyball news
The women’s club volleyball team SCHWERINER SC seized its fourth national title by defeating the team of Rote Raben VILSBIBURG in the final match of German National Cup on Sunday.
The Gerry Weber Stadion in Halle provided the backdrop for the final showdown, where SCHWERINER SC displayed better game and dominated the other team. The final set scores were: 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 27-25.
The thrilling match was witnessed by more than 10,000 spectators, who had come to watch the live action of volleyball from different parts of Germany.
The German National Volleyball Cup also featured the men’s games. In the men’s section, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN went on top and secured the title. FRIEDRICHSHAFEN edged out Generali UNTERHACHING in consecutive frames.
Both victorious teams were awarded with trophies and medals. The Minister-President of the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Erwin Sellering, was featured as the guest of honour at the award ceremony and he presented the trophies to the winners.
Anne Buijs of SCHWERINER SC proved to be the most influential player in the match. She was named the MVP of the final match. Likewise, her teammates Patricia Thormann and Julia Retzlaff did exceptionally well and led SCHWERINER SC to a wonderful triumph.
Under the leadership of Teun Buijs, the team started out well in the first set and gradually took the control of operations.
With good combination of attack and defence strategy, the SCHWERINER SC managed to push the VILSBIBURG squad behind the attack line. The captain of SCHWERINER SC used almost all options in the attack and did not allow VILSBIBURG to come up. They kept the
lead in hand for better time in the first set and ultimately went on front with 1-0 after achieving set points.
In the second set, the girls around head coach Teun Buijs carried the same momentum and took up an early lead. VILSBIBURG players came from different angles but could not achieve desired results. They slipped the second set with margin of 10 points at 15-25,
while SCHWERINER SC extended its lead to 2-0.
Following the loss of two sets, the VILSBIBURG hit back aggressively and gave a good competition to SCHWERINER SC in third set. Long rallies were exchanged and the situation remained undecided until the final whistle of referee. VILSBIBURG finally managed
to capture the third frame with slight margin of two points, 25-23.
Nevertheless, the happiness was short-lived as SCHWERINER SC bounced back in the fourth set. After a close competition, they stamped 27-25 win over VILSBIBURG and claimed 3-1 match victory.
Head coach Teun Buijs was overwhelmed by the spectacular performance his team. He shared his thoughts after the match in the following manner, “It is my first season with the club and we have already seized one trophy. That’s fantastic. And the atmosphere
here, I do not know what I shall say, just superb!”
