  1. That was the popular theory for many years that it was a giant meteor that hit the yucatan peninsula about 65 million years ago.  It was believed that with the giant dust cloud that was created might haveblocked out the sun and killed off the dinosaurs over the next few years.  

    Other theories have sprouted up recently such has mass disease that may have contributed also.  I still believe the meteor theory as the best one mainly because evidence suggests that a meteor did strike about 65 million years ago.  There is a layer of irridium(element rare on earth but very prevalent in meteors) in the earths crust all over the world.  Samples of this layer of irridium have been taken all over the world and all have been dated to about 65 million years old.  This layer, plus the giant crater off the coast of the yucatan peninsula, is strong evidence for a giant meteor striking the earth about that time.  Since its widely believed that dinosaurs went extinct about the same time, its still the best theory that I have heard.
