Science Fair - Model Land Fill ! HELP? PLEASE!?

im doing a science fair project [ earth science] on a model land fill using 2 plastic bottles and soil. i need to observe the rate of decompostion ,etc. and well i need to have the temperature of the soil...but the termometer i have isnt working properly. oh btw, i added cold water to the soil. what is the possible temperature of the soil? can it increase or decrease over the course of a few days? - the bottle is located on my shelf - no sunlight. PLEASE help. i need this by today. THANKS!

The soil is at room temperature which is around 78 degrees. There is probably not that much material decomposing in your soil so the temperature is probably not going to change much. Hope this helps.
