Hi

I need to know the answer to the question below, I've tried and tried but keep getting confused!

Can anyone help me out?

Many Thanks

A child is at a swimming pool. She climbs the steps to the diving board, 3.6 m above the water. She jumps off the board, which enables her to rise a further 1.0 m before she begins her descent to the pool. At what speed does she enter the water?

Assume that acceleration due to gravity, g, is 9.8 m s−2 .

  1. about 9.5 meters per second

    equation is

    sqrt(2gd)

    d= distance

    g= gravity (9.8)

  2. If I understand you correctly,

    g = 9.8m/sec^2

    S = distance travelled = 3.6 + 1.0 =4.6 metres

    S= 0.5gt^2 = 4.6

    t^2 = 9.2/g = 9.2/9.8 =  0.9388

    t =  0.9689

    However, I'm surprised that whoever assigned this didn't fiddle the numbers so answer would be something easy; like 1. So maybe I missed something.
