1. If the only thing you know about a plant is that it contains 12 petals, why can't you say for sure whether it is a monocot or dicot?

2. What are some things you might take for granted that wouldn't be possible without seeded plants?

3. Explain why mosses are usually found in moist areas.

  1. 1.  Most monocots have flower parts in multiples of 3.  Most dicots have flower parts in multiples of 4 or 5.  12 could fit either category.  Also there are exceptions to these rules.

    2.  Fruit of any kind.  Wood or its products (e.g. paper).

    3.  Mosses don't have vascular systems -- that is, any cells to carry water over long distances in the plant.  Therefore their method of keeping their cells hydrated is not very efficient (the water has to go from one cell to the next by connections called plasmodesmata, or around the cells in the cell walls).  Therefore mosses would dry out very easily.
