  1. where do you live?

what impacts the environment around your area?

study it; come up with a way to solve the problem.

green themes are very hot these days.

  2. A project on Stem Cell research. A lot of people claim to know about it, but many don't. You'll surprise them!

  3. Nope, I don't know, but I can tell you where to go.

First you need to know what field you want to explore, then you need to know your grade level and what you can attempt, finally you want to establish your budget.

    Try these websites:

Check this Google search for more ideas:  http://www.google.com/search?q=science+f...

In the meantime you might want to think about what the judging committee would like?  Current topics like global warming, recyclable products, renewable energy sources are all timely and would weigh as better projects in the minds of the judges.

Ask your teacher, or look in the records, to see who won last year and what project they used to do it with.  You don't want to duplicate their work, but you could do something from a related field.  At least you will have an idea of what you need to beat and what the winning standards are.  While you are at it check out what other projects were done so you can see what NOT to do and what are the same old projects done year after year.  For example the baking soda volcano is a cliche (a very old and too often used idea).

Solar cell research is interesting, do you know how a motor works? Or what about how an electronic eye or a TV remote works?  I know American Scientific Surplus carries a do it yourself motor kit that can be used to explain one.  Generators are just motors that are spun by something like wind turbines to create energy.  A simple wind turbine that you can blow to activate would be a good idea.  According to this month's Popular Science vertical turbines (with the blades running up and down) are more efficient in low winds than the propeller type turbines.

You can cheap parts here:  American Scientific Surplus  http://www.sciplus.com/

They will also have some ideas and you can order a paper catalog.

Advanced projects would be to try and make a bridge that can hold a lot of weight out of only Popsicle sticks or straws?  These kinds of projects have been assigned to college Freshmen.  A method to make your straws stronger would be to use string to put the bridge in suspension or tension, it is cheating for the Freshman engineers, but not for you since cables are often used on bridges.  You could run the string inside of the straws and then when they see it stressed you can reveal your secret and explain how both the forces of compression (squeeze) and tension (pull) are necessary in bridge design.  Simple bridge design is the fundamental way buildings are put together; they are just bridges with walls, so the ideas are common to most of engineering.
