Purpose of respiration: to get oxygen to cells so they can convert food molecules into ATP (energy source) to use for certain tasks (replicating, etc)

Equation:

C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O

Organisms which carry out cellular respiration: All animals and bacteria (plants and fungi respirate at night time, and photosynthesize during the day)
