what is an inference and how do i draw one from ice cream sales increase during the summer the number of murders increases during the summer? this is a question on my homework but i don't get it?

  1. An inference is a conclusion you can draw from statements that are made. The problem is that this conclusion is sometimes considered incorrect.

    So with your example:

    The inference would be that the either 1) ice cream causes more murders or 2) murderers want ice cream after they kill someone.

    In actuality, the real conclusion is that murders are more likely to happen on hot days because people lose their rationality and become more short tempered. Consequentially, ice cream sales are also higher on hot days.


  2. An inference is when you derive information from text that isn't explicitly told to you. For example, from the sentence "he blew out his candles, and everyone cheered", you can infer that it is his birthday.

    I think for your homework, they are asking what you can infer from increased ice cream sales and increased murders in the summer. Can you say that they are related? That one causes the other? Or, can you infer anything at all from this information?
