Science in 18th century was seen as vehicle of improvement in either moral or material terms?

Does somebody has a clue what was happening in Scotland in the 18th century and why science was regarded so high and valueable. Coz I have no idea about Scotish enlightment.

  1. Throughout Europe, not only Scotland, science could at last explore the mysteries of nature and to advance explanations free from the fear of religious dogma. Not since the Neoplatonic Age a few centuries into the Christian era had this been possible.
