  1. In order for something to be living it has to be made of cells, obtain and use energy, grow and develop, reproduce, respond to their environment, and adapt to their environment.

So I would say first take a sample of it and look under a microscope to see if it contains cells. Then do a study on it in it's environment to find out the rest.

  2. Viruses are currently considered living but do not have cells just a DNA or RNA chromosomes in a protein coat.  Reproduction I think would be key.

  3. i think the consiousness should be the criteria.

because a rock can also increase its mass by deposition of soil particals but a rock is not alive .

it cannot respond to any stimulation .

this is the most unique factor which differentiate between the living and non-living .

even the smallest living organism give response to the stimulation may be of light or temperature or any favourable or unfavourable conditions.
