  1. A: Technology and

    C: Kilogram:

There are Six, main, S.I. base units of which C: is one.

(The others are ..metre (m), second (s), Ampere (A), °C/K and candela (cd)).

There are no basic units for Volume in S.I.

  2. In the first question I would have called it applied science, but I will take technology (A).

In the second question it would be liter...(no prefix attached is the clue).

  3. A; C.

  4. The key points in the first question are that you are USING something to BUILD something else.

"Pure science" would involve studying something just for the sake of learning how it works (like dissection - you don't get anything useful out of cutting up a flower except learning how it works).

After you understand how something works you can think about how to USE this new knowledge in an APPLICATION (like thinking of a new way to attract insects to a trap to kill them so they don't bite you). This is TECHNOLOGY that is helpful to us.

How do we find out how something works, or how we can make it useful? We do EXPERIMENTS and study the mathematics.

So, regarding superconductors, this started as pure science (people said "what if there was no resistance? what would the current do? how can we write equations to describe this behavior?") then others did experiments ("let's cool this special material down and see what happens") and still others found a way to apply this to technology ("we could use this to improve computers, let's work on that.").

See how it all fits together?

The SI units are m, kg, s, A, K, mol, cd. Adding centi/mili/micro/mega/giga/etc changes their size. Adding cubic or square changes the dimension.

  5. Both are A

  6. Ah, let's see.

For the first question, A seems most appropriate. Nothing really biological about it, and well, technology makes the most sense.

As far as number 2, beyond a doubt, the answer is C, the kilogram. The base units for the rest of the answers are the milliliter, the cubic centimeter and the meter.
