  2. Silt has several meanings. Silt can be the material collected on the bottom of a body of water. Silt is also the medium sized particle and sand the largest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silt

    Loam is an optimal particle mixture of sand, silt & clay. Subsoil or the mineral 'B' horizon lies beneath the organic rich topsoil. It can be deposited or it can be decomposed from the parent rock in place.

    Clay can be made up of several specific sets of minerals. Illite clay is an example.

    Silts are different minerals that retain a, generally, larger particle size than clay particles and are granular not plate-like. Silt is never associated with classes of minerals like clay is.
