Scientific historians: can you help me?

Question

I have an acquaintance that is trying to tell me that the n**i's "invented" Lyme disease, and that they also "invented" the HIV virus. I know this to be clearly false, but I am seeking peer-reviewed reports to add further documentation. Thanks to all who help in advance.

It's the blog of an HIV researcher.  It gets technical at times, even for people who have studied biology but haven't specialized in virology.  The author occasionally battles with HIV deniers, though.  You can probably find some good arguments and information in the backlogged entries.

No matter how it was started all viruses undergo a gradual mutation of their genetic code. In order for there to be the diversity we see today, the virus most likely mutated into existence as the HIV-1 virus around 1930.

If the n**i's invented it why were none of the concentration camp victims affected by it? The n**i's invented it and then waited until the 1960's to release it in chimps, and then orchestrated the transmission to people in Africa?

Lyme disease has been documented as far back as 1883, so I don't know what proof someone with such a bizarre view would accept.

I applaud your efforts to engage this person, but I am reminded of Nietzsche's quote, "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster."
