What's the deal? I've heard rumors about them working on something for 20 years and there sending it into space and many scientist think it'll create a black hole and take earth in. Has anyone heard anything like this? I heard it from my friend Shelby, but I'm not sure... So if anyone can help me, thanks.

  1. The Short answer is NO.

There are some experiments in Switzerland with what is know as a Super Collider, but it cannot be sent into space . . .

. . .because it is bigger than a small town!  It is literally MILES wide, and weighs hundreds of tons.  IF (and that is a really bit IF) they build one in space it would have to be built on the moon, or another planet. We simply do not have the money, men, or rocket power to do something like this in space.

As for being on earth, the reports of it making a small black hole are greatly exaggerated.  First, it takes HUGE amounts of power to make a black hole -- if we could make one.  This thing in Siwtzerland just doesn't have that kind of power.

Second, if a black hole did form, it would be the size of an atom,  Now, the power of a black hole is based on its size, and a black hole the size of an atom just isn't powerful enough to suck in the whole earth.

And third, black  holes are very unstable. If they exist, they often disappear as quickly as they are formed.  And their stabiliuty is based on their size.  again, an atom-sized black hole would be VERY temporary.

And finally, no one has every created or even seen a true black hole.  Why? Because of all of the above -- black hole need to be absolutely HUGE to exists, stay in existence, and do any damage.  The Super Collider in Switzerland just isn't big enough to make one like that.

Don;t worry -- we're going to be here for a LONG time.

  2. I think you're referring to the LHC - the Large Hadron Collider, recently completed in France and Switzerland.  It's a particle accelerator, 17 miles in circumference, designed to momentarily create the Higgs Boson - the so-called "God Particle" - father (or mother) of all other particles.

One of the possible results of a successful run would be the momentary creation of very small black holes - but their mass would be so small, and the area affected around them so minute, that they'll pose no problem.

  3. You are probably referring to the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland.  It isn't going to be sent into space.  It is for research and they think they may be able to create micro black holes.  These will disappear immediately due to Hawking radiation.

  4. this thing is a particle acceleratorr that when particles cllide make extremly small blackholes to small to suck any thing in.

  5. well i think what you have heard is the particle smasher in france/swiss border. it will go live this year. when they accelerate particles at near the speed of light and collide them together it may create mini blackholes.

blackholes are very dense matter that even light itself cannot escape its gravity. its so dense that it would sink to the middle of the earth and slowly consumes everything around it (earth). what is in the blackhole is unknown.
