  1. Yes, but not in the near future. The players are still expensive, and not everyone had an HD TV to go with it (also a bit pricey). Eventually it will happen, and you can look forward to buying your movie collection all over again, lol.

  2. In time yes, it will still be a few years before they stop releasing new titles on DVD. The good thing about a Blu-Ray player is that it can still play your DVD's so you do not need to rebuy your collection again, just keeping watching all your old DVD's and watch your new Blu-Ray's on the same machine.

  3. Not for a good long time.... but yes they will.

The next thing they'll do, When a BIG movie comes out that made lots of money at the movies... there going to say...

This movie is Blu-ray only... not going to be on normal DVD, it's a way to start making people go Blu-ray or not be able to get that movie at all.

  4. The so called format war hasn't changed anything regarding DVD.

DVD replaced VHS quickly because it solved all the problems with that format (fragile, gradual degredation, poor picture and sound, no random access, relatively bulky). Yet VHS is still around .. you can buy the tapes and the players.

Blu-ray doesn't solve any problems, it just gives a bit better picture and audio ... but it's an incremental improvement, costs significantly more and -- unlike DVD -- only a minority of consumers can benefit.

There are 80,000+ DVD titles in the catalog ... and growing faster than Blu-ray (currently just over 500). Blu-ray and HD DVD together sold only half as many disks (8.3 million) since HD disks were introduced as DVD did in the same time after introduction (16.3 million) --- proof it isn't catching on the same way.

Blu-ray is, and will remain, a premium priced HD format available as an alternative to DVD -- not a replacement. And the studios want it that way since they will make more money by selling both DVDs and Blu-ray -- DVDs to the majority of consumers and Blu-ray to those willing to pay the higher prices.  Both Blu-ray and HD Video on Demand-type service (which will impact mainly the rental market) will cut into DVD sales, but DVD will be around for a long time yet.

So, to answer your question, DVD will be discontinued someday, but it will probably still be popular long after Blu-ray has been replaced with the next big thing.

  5. DVD was released over 10 years ago and we are just now getting rid of VHS. DVDs will still be around for awhile.

  6. Probably not very soon - they have come out with Super Audio CD's and you don't see regular CD's being discontinued and taken off of the shelves. Where VHS tapes wear out over time and did not hold as much data as standard DVDs, there aren't as many differences between standard DVD and Blu-Ray - just image quality. I anticipate that regular DVDs will remain in production for a long time.

  7. Only a matter of time.

  8. Give it about 5 years or so. I can't imagine that it would take much longer than that.
