  1. The Kymco line is  probably the best for you to look at, they are not Chinese. They are rated as the best in the world next to Vespa and Piaggio. They have many sizes and  models to fill the individual needs .  They are rated higher and a better value than the Japanese brands. Also you should take a MSF   course.

  2. The two most popular scooters in America are Vespas and Hondas with Yamaha coming in third. You pay a little more for these brands but if you want quality you need to pay for it.

You should consider a 250cc engine since it runs a little faster and stronger especially if you're driving on long stretches where the avg speed goes up to 50 mph or if you're going up hills.

  3. The main thing I would suggest for someone new to scooting is to avoid any of these chinese made scooters (unless you have good mechanics skills)  First look toward Kymco, Vespa, Piaggio, SYM, Genuine Scooter Co, and even honda and yamaha make pretty reliable scooters.  Kymco, Piaggio, and Vespa are the cream of the crop but Kymco's are much more affordable.  The next thing you need to decide is what engine size.  This is the 50cc, 150cc, 250cc, etc.  Theres also liquid cooled vs air cooled, fuel injected vs carburated, etc... theres really quite a bit to it.  There are lots of resources available though... like the forum below

  4. For God's sake stay away from anything Chinese.   They are appalling rubbish and the back up service is usually non existent. Go for reputable makes, preferably Japanese; Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha.

As to spec; everybody has different needs.  Go to your nearest motorcycle dealer and ask advice.

Repeat advice; stay away from Chinese junk.

  5. Find a good dealer, ask them the questions. Look for something with warranty, and factory service. Depending on your use and distance you plan to travel will dictate the size engine you need. Take time to learn to ride by taking a MC safety course, lot of prcatice before heading into traffic. Remember car drivers cant see you... Somehow you become invisible to them !

  6. If you don't want a gas scooter, you should check out electric scooters. If you are in a city, an electric scooter could be just right for you. Go to www.scootersnbikes.com to see some quality electric scooters for less than $900. Thompson scooters have steel frames and wheel rims and can go around 24 mph on flat ground. In some states, all you need is a regular driver's license to operate one!
