Scooter Laws NC?

I read online that a scooter in NC cannot exceed 50cc or 30 mph. Today I bought a yamaha c3 49 cc. The dealer said it was street legal, never asked for my license (only a form of ID) etc. He even said that all I needed was to be 16 andwear a helmet However, i read this law after i got home. I notice that the scooter has a top speed of 45 mph (according to the odometer). Do I still have to register as a motorcycle in the state?

  1. I believe that as long as the engine is 50cc or under you are okay.  'Shouldn't need a license.

  2. If you are "clocked" by the police exceeding the moped speed limitation on a public road, you will be SUBJECT to receiving very expensive citations for no registration, insurance, and motorcycle driver license endorsement . . can't have it both ways.  One method of restricting top speed would be to install a spacer under the carb diaphragm cover to prevent the main-jet needle slide from fully rising.

  3. You would need to contact your local department of motor vehicles and ask them so that you can get the correct answer.....................
