  1. The numbers before the x indicate the power, or magnification. In this case, the binoculars (or telescope) has a zoom feature, so the magnification can be anywhere from 3 to 9 power. That's a good range for a handheld optic.

    The number after the x is the diameter of the objective lens (or lenses, if binoculars) in millimeters. The objective lenses are the big lenses in front, and the larger the number the dimmer the object you can see. In this case, the binocs have 40 mm objectives, which is medium-small.

    "Standard" binoculars are usually 7x35 or 10x50.
