Scoreboard round-up, day three WGC-HSBC Champions
It was a crazy day at the WGC-HSBC Champions as extremely low scores were shot. Louis Oosthuizen saw his lead of five strokes cut down to zero, although he is still a joint leader.
Lee Westwood finally got his act together and shot eleven birdies to climb right up on the leaderboard. He is the co-leader, with Oosthuizen.
Westwood shot 11-under 61 to give him a huge chance of winning the WGC-HSBC Champions. It has been a below par season for the Englishman but signing off with a win will do him tremendous good.
"I just wanted to come out fast and try to get some momentum. That's been missing from my game the last couple of weeks," said Westwood.
"I came out as quick as you like with three birdies, and that got me going and the hole started to look bigger".
The highlight of the day came from Brandt Snedeker, as he flirted with golf’s magical number 59.
American Snedeker missed the magical 59 by an inch. Nevertheless, he shot the course record and gave himself an outside chance of victory.
"I'd love to have that putt again," he said. "I hit a great putt and it stinks not doing it (59) but it's still a great round and I got back in the golf tournament, which is nice".
Snedeker was once again very hot with his putter. He putted 10th from a distance of 75 feet and the 17th from a distance of 25 feet. It was his best round ever and he would have loved to make that birdie putt on the 18th.
The two time champion of the tournament, Phil Mickelson, was also in contention, as he shot 6-under 66.
Lefty is just three shots behind the leaders. A decent round on Sunday will definitely give him an excellent chance of winning the event for a record third time.
Meanwhile, the defending champion, Martin Kaymer is six shots behind the joint leaders. He shot 5-under for the day. If Kaymer can register something like a low 60, then he might have an outside chance.
Ian Poulter also had a decent round. He shot 7-under for the day. The Englishman is four shots adrift of the leaders. A similar round on Sunday will surely raise his hopes for a victory.
