Scot Catriona Matthew wins the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open on LET
Scotland’s Catriona Matthew won the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open presented by EventScotland last week with an overwhelming lead of 10 shots over her competitors. Matthew, who lives just minute’s drive from the Archerfield Links, utilized her experience
and tons of knowledge about the course to overpower her opponents for a Ladies European Tour titles and a lucrative cheque of €33,000.
“I’m absolutely delighted to win the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open on my home turf on a course I’m a member at and I live along the road. I felt a little bit of pressure at the start of the week, so I’m just delighted that I finished well,” said Matthew,
who also won the 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open right here and owns a lifetime membership of the club.
Heading into the final round, the 41-year-old Scot held a stiff four-shot lead from her blistering record-leveling round on Friday and capitalized on it to post her fourth victory on the tour. Matthew has represented Europe five times in the Solheim Cup
and is one of the grizzled veterans on the tour.
“I played really well and got a hot putter and probably played my best golf today. I played really well on the front nine and knew I had eight shots, which in a way made it more difficult, but I managed to trot out a few pars,” she added.
The final day turned out to be a breezy day where the course was shattered with heavy gusts of wind rendering a typical Links Golf scenario for the players. Matthew probably took full advantage of her familiarity with Links Golf and forged her way up the
leaderboard with none of the approaching contenders in sight. She posted a final round score of six-under, 66 to close for a 15-under, 201 on the aggregate.
First round leader American Hannah Jun kept up with her promise and pulled another solid round of 72 on to finish for an outright second trailing the leader by 10 shots. She was closely challenged by the Frenchwoman Caroline Afonso who finished for an outright
third with her aggregate score of 212. Elizabeth Bennet of England finished for an outright fourth with her aggregate score of 213.
Few of the big wigs of the tour including Lydia Hall Diana Luna finished for a joint ninth after their disappointing performance in the event while many of the young players failed to break the ranks for a victory in order to qualify for the Solheim Cup
next month.
This was Matthew’s second victory on the Irish Links in her 17-year-long professional career after she won the 1998 WPGA Championship of Europe at Gleneagles. Mathew will now be flying off to Canada for two more events before returning back to Europe for
the Solheim Cup.
