Scotland Senior Championships: Matthew Carder beats Andrew Gilliland to win Men’s Singles title
Scotland’s Matthew Carder proved his mettle on court and remained successful in winning the Men’s Singles title after defeating his lower ranked compatriot Andrew Gilliland in the final clash at the West of Scotland Senior Championships 2012 at Glasgow,
Scotland, on Sunday, October 21.
The impressive Carder, who was the second seeded player in the main draw of the championship, had to dig into his arsenal to outplay his rival in a hard-fought three-set contest.
Carder played impressive badminton throughout the tournament and remained on track in the final match. He employed every skill to grab victory in rubber games by taking 37 minutes on the court.
In the meanwhile, the fifth seeded Gilliland created trouble for his rival in the title match by playing to his maximum potential but failed to remain consistent in the final set and went down to his higher ranked opponent in a reasonable manner.
In the first game, both shuttlers played with tremendous precision and stayed close in the opening half.
However, Carder lost her focus in the arena as he could not put up strong show and eventually lost the game with a 17-21 score on the board.
In the second set, the in-form Carder delivered a phenomenal feat in the arena as he played shots with impressive variations from starting rallies.
Carder was incredibly quick in taking the bird quite early and he did not encounter any trouble in executing his shots in right areas and took a reasonable lead until the break.
After the interval, Gilliland tried to play attacking badminton but failed to take control of rallies and remained trailing behind his rival.
The impressive Carder was quite calm and composed on court as he did not commit mistakes and won the second game with a tight margin of 23-21.
Gilliland was once again in all sorts of trouble in the final set as he received a punishing treatment from his opponent who was flawless on court.
Carder was unmatched on court and he faced no trouble in winning the final set with a staggering 21-7 score on the board.
The second seeded Carder won this title match in three games with a decent total of 17-21, 23-21 and 21-7.
