Scotland Yard may prosecute the tainted trio from Pakistan Cricket
The controversial spot-fixing imbroglio has taken an ugly turn as Britain’s Attorney General has admitted that under a 104 year old corruption law the three players, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir can still be prosecuted. Sources within the
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756 Yard admitted that the case against the three players for defrauding bookmakers was weak however they said that the investigators might be able to pursue a case of “accepting or obtaining corrupt payments” contrary to their “employers affairs or considerations”
under the 1906 Corruption Act.
This act was originally drafted for those individuals working in public offices who would indulge in corrupt practices and carries a maximum penalty of seven years behind bars. A local British newspaper has admitted that there exists a “strong appetite”
to prosecute the three players according to sources within the police and the legal fraternity.
This news comes after another cricketer who was accused on similar charges has been prosecuted under the rarely used 104 year old corruption law. The Attorney General gave heads up to a decision of prosecuting the English county player Mervyn Westfield who
was charged for deliberately underperforming in a domestic ODI game against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782. This decision has now paved way for the Pakistani cricketers to be charged under the same law.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 cricket players made headlines after news emerged in a local tabloid that claimed that these cricketers had accepted huge sums of money to bowl deliberate no balls during a particular time of the innings. This was followed by a provisional suspension
by the ICC against these players and it is expected that their cases will be heard by the end of the calendar year.
PCB has barred these players from using its facilities and from entering the Gaddafi Stadium. It is also likely that these players will miss the coming World Cup as it is expected that the squad will be announced on the 19th of December. Other
players who will in most probability be missing out from the team include http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314 and Kamran Akmal.
