Scotland boss delighted with debutantes in win over Faroe Islands
Scotland national team coach Craig Levein says he is pleased with the players who made their debuts in his side's 3-0 win over Faroe Islands at Pittodrie on Tuesday 16 November.
Liverpool defender Danny Wilson, who was making his international debut at senior level, put the home side ahead after 23 minutes when he stabbed home a corner from Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam.
The lead was extended when Derby County winger Kris Commons thumped in the ball from close range from another delivery by Adam. Queens Park Rangers striker Jamie Mackie completed the scoring just before half-time, when he tapped in a Wilson knockdown from a
Barry Bannan cross.
Levein was pleased with the night's work, and with seven players making their international debuts, he had plenty of hope for the future of the Scotland team.
The former Dundee United boss was quick to praise his debutantes, including Wilson, Craig Bryson, James McArthur, David Goodwillie, Cammy Bell and Steven Saunders. Levein was particularly pleased with Aston Villa midfielder Bannan.
He told reporters, "People don't understand how difficult it is to make an international debut, no matter who you're playing. I felt that young Bannan in particular, after a shaky first five minutes, settled down and showed glimpses of what the future is for
Scotttish football. If he keeps playing the way he is, I would be silly not to include him (in future squads), but he is just a young lad.
"I've been banging the drum this week about us having a group of players who are technically pretty good. I include him in that, and I include Danny Wilson.”
Levein added that the friendly game had unearthed a couple of players who looked completely comfortable at international level, and they would give him food for thought when the UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying campaign continues next year.
"I've found the one or two I was looking for. This group I'm trying to assemble is good and there have been some fantastic performances in recent games from guys who weren't even here tonight. But we got to see what I believe is the future of Scottish football
tonight."
