Scotland whitewash Wales, 6-0 in Celtic Cup: Women Hockey News
In the opening contest of the Celtic Cup, Scotland thrashed Wales by a convincing six goal margin, 6-0 that took place at Inverclyde, Scotland. With the victory, the hopes of the host Scotland increased to clinch the title for the consecutive fifth year.
Gordon Shepherd, the Chief trainer of the Scottish Women’s side, believes that the tournament will assist them to improve their performance for the upcoming Champions Challenge, scheduled to be held later in this month in Dublin.
From the very first minute of the match, the Scottish side dominated the field with back-to-back attacks. Ailsa Wyllie after getting a pass from Nikki Kidd in the first minute of the match deflected the ball comfortably into the Welsh goal, opening the score
1-0.
In the very next minute, Kidd again sent a pass to Wyllie, but this time she failed to capitalise the chance. Her shot went over the cage and the score remained at 1-0.
Catriona Raplh of Scotland managed to take the ball at the top of the circle, but her hit went wide of the goal. In the later time, Kidd converted the first short-corner of the game in the 10th minute of the match and expanded the lead up to two
goals, 2-0.
The strikers from Scotland were at their best and continued their domination throughout the two halves. On the other side, the defending girls from Scotland did not allow the opponent players to get onto the score-board. Many attacks were carried out in
the last ten minutes of the first half, but the Welsh custodian denied the strikes from Linda Clement, Laura Bartlett and Sam Judge.
The strikers from Scotland increased their speed in the second half in order to take the results into their favour. In the 45th minute of the game, Vikki Bunce of Dundee Wanderers managed to get into the defensive circle of Wales and executed
a low-flying shot at the goal, increasing the lead up to three goals, 3-0.
In the later time, Emily Maguire found her alone before the cage and unleashed a powerful shot to expand the lead up to four goals, 4-0. The strikers from Scotland were continuously attacking the defence line of Wales. The ball mostly remained in the D-Line
of Wales, where Judge and Clement were at their best. They put the Welsh defenders under intense pressure and gave Kidd a chance to add another goal by tapping the ball.
In the 63rd minute of the game, Scotland earned another short-corner and this time Catriona Ralph struck a well-coordinated shot sealing the Scotland’s victory at 6-0. The Scotland Women’s team are on high verge to capture the Celtic Cup in the
absence of French team.
