Scotland clinched a 12-run victory over Northamptonshire in a match of the Clydesdale Bank 40 - Group B, at the Grange Cricket club Ground, Raeburn Place, Edinburgh in Scotland on Sunday, July 17, 2011.
The match didn’t start on scheduled time, as the outfield was wet due to rain. Both teams and the spectators had to wait for some time before some action finally began.
After the umpires inspected the ground and decided to start play, the game was reduced to 36 overs per side. Although both teams would have liked a complete match, they would have been pleased to have lost only a few overs.
The hosts batted first and reached 223 runs for the loss of seven wickets at the end of their allotted 36 overs. The highlight of the innings was a spectacular century from opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KJ-Coetzer-c1798, who top scored the game with 122 runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northamptonshire-c824 fought hard and came very close to victory, but managed only 211 runs for the loss of six wickets in the end. Ireland’s, Niall O’Brien was the top scorer for his side, contributing 81 runs in the innings.
The visitors’ captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Peters-c2574 won the toss and decided to field first. There were some clouds over the field and the new ball bowlers were expected to get some assistance in the first half an hour of play.
Scotland’s opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DF-Watts-c1365 failed to make an impression and was dismissed early in the innings. He managed 12 runs off 15 balls in his short stay at the crease.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Calum-Scott-MacLeod-c49129 walked out in the middle to join Coetzer and the pair put their team on top with a brilliant half-century stand. They collected 93 runs for the second wicket partnership, guiding the team’s total to 121.
Macleod was unable to make most of the good conditions and was sent back to the pavilion after scoring 33 runs from 45 balls. He played sensibly and rotated the strike over to his aggressive partner at the other end rather than attempting any attacking strokes.
Josh Davey didn’t have an ideal outing and was dismissed cheaply after adding just a couple of runs to the total. However, Preston Mommsen gave some momentum to the home team with a quick fire 32 off 21 balls. He struck two fours and the same number of sixes
in his cameo innings.
Coetzer batted until the end of the innings and was dismissed on the second last delivery of the innings. He scored 122 runs off 109 deliveries with the help of 14 fours and a couple of sixes, guiding Scotland to 223.
