Scotland’s John Higgins prevails in first match against Liang Wenbo: 2012 World Snooker Championship
Defending Champion from Scotland, John Higgins has crossed his first hurdle after winning his opening match against China’s Liang Wenbo. The reigning Champion seemed under a lot of pressure when he started playing against the Chinese potter. The pair went
neck-to-neck until the decisive frame where Higgins was victorious and booked his place in the second round.
Before coming into the Crucible Theatre, Higgins was quite concerned about his performance because he was not hoping for a better outcome. The Wizard of Wishaw did not have a convincing snooker season as he was unable to win any major snooker event during
his season campaign. However, he began his run of the Championship with good game play.
The four-time World Snooker Champion was in strong position when he led the game 6-4 but all of a sudden he went under immense pressure as the Chinese player bounced back to hit four consecutive frame wins to snatch the lead from the Scotsman.
Trailing 6-8 to the Chinese was indeed a grim situation for the Champ but he managed to make it 9-9 with his superb comeback. The final frame finished in Higgins’ favour and he surged into the second round.
While speaking to World Snooker after his match, Higgins said, “I'm just drained. When I went 8-6 behind I was trying not to give in, but I was thinking I've got nothing left, and I was really struggling.”
The Scot added, “I don't know how I've won it really, I probably didn't deserve to win it because I didn't play anywhere near well enough to merit winning that game. I just can't believe I've won. I'm just delighted to win and it looks as if I'll be playing
Hendry which would be great because I've never played him here.”
Higgins will be meeting the former seven-time World Snooker Champion, compatriot Stephen Hendry, the opponent he wanted to play in the 2012 World Snooker Championship from the beginning. The clash will definitely be a thrilling competition. It will be interesting
to see how Higgins manages to carry his winning momentum forward.
