Scotland’s Stephen Hendry retires from World Snooker: 2012 World Snooker Championship
After ruling the world of snooker for 27 years, the legendary potter and a record seven-time World Snooker Championship winner, Scotland’s Stephen Hendry has announced his retirement from World Snooker. The living legend was playing his last World Snooker
Championship where he lost to compatriot Stephen Maguire by the score lie of 2-13 in the quarter-final clash at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
The Golden Boy hinted his retirement last year when he received a major defeat in the second round but after consulting his family, he decided to stay in the game. However, he only played in major snooker events in the recent season due to which he had to
participate in the qualifying session of the mega event this year.
This time, he made his retirement decision three months ago but he did not inform anyone. He did hint his decision before coming to the Crucible arena but nobody knew that it will be so sudden. He was sitting in a regular press conference after his defeat
at the hands of Maguire where all of a sudden he announced his retirement from World Snooker and shocked the reporters present there.
While speaking in the press conference, Hendry said, “I made the decision about three months ago, I didn't tell many people, I only told two or three people but this is me finished in tournament snooker. It was quite an easy decision, there's a few reasons
which I'm not going to go into in detail and bore you with.”
The Golden Brain added, “I've got other things I want to do, I've got a lot of commitments now in China which I've signed up for and I can't do both, I can't do that and play snooker, because I would never be at home, so the time is right for me.”
The 43-year-old had a tremendous start of the 2012 World Snooker Championship and made his way successfully into the quarter-final stage of the event after beating the defending Champion, John Higgins in the second round. He was not able to play accordingly
in the quarters and tumbled down easily at the hands of Maguire to lose the game by 2-13.
