Scotland’s Stephen Maguire whitewashes world champ John Higgins in Round 2: 2012 German Masters
Snooker fans witnessed a major upset in the second round of the 2012 German Masters as Scotland’s Stephen Maguire gave a major blow to the reigning World Snooker Champion, compatriot John Higgins and ousted him by the score line of 5-0. For the first time
in his past 16-year snooker career, the four-time World Snooker Champion has been whitewashed by any player.
Last time he was whitewashed at the 1996 Asian Classic in Thailand when he played against Karl Burrows in the first round. The Scotsman was not able to clinch even a single frame in that encounter and tumbled down to Burrows by the score line of 5-0. After
that, the Wizard of Wishaw never faced a single whitewash defeat but at the 2012 German Masters, he lost at the hands of Maguire.
The World Number eight produced an outstanding display of his snooker skills at the baize in Tempodrom arena. He did not let his veteran opponent spend any time on the table and completely unsettled him with his impressive snooker genius. The Livewire pocketed
some stunning knocks of 74, 89 and 52 to dominate the second-round match and surge into the third round.
In his post match interview with the World Snooker, Maguire said, “In the first frame we both had chances, and after that I played well. To beat John any time is great for my confidence. We're good friends and once the match is over we shake hands and go
back to that.”
The 30-year-old added, “He's crushed me a few times so it's nice to get one back. We'll go for dinner together tonight and I'll have the bragging rights. He'll be back soon and I wouldn't be surprised if he wins the next tournament.”
The Glasgow potter will next meet the 2011 UK Championship winner, Judd Trump in Round 3 of 2012 German Masters. Speaking to the media about his contest against Trump, Maguire said that Mr. Haircut 100 has been the best player in the world for the past few
months.
Maguire added that he is confident now after beating the World Champion and will be able to oust Trump.
Trump defeated 2011 UK Championship runner-up, Mark Allen by the score line of 5-2 in the second round of the tournament.
