Scott Baker’s shutout innings help Minnesota Twins defeat San Diego Padres 1-0 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins’ starter, Scott Baker did an outstanding job with his pitching as he threw eight innings with an ERA of 3.24 in the Twins’ 1-0 victory over the San Diego Padres at Target Field, Minnesota on June 18.
During the first inning, both the teams were unable to add any run on the score-board. The Twins got off the mark in the second inning by posting one run and took a decisive 1-0 lead. Danny Valencia hit a solo homer (402 feet) towards left centre-field.
The batters failed to score in the last seven innings due to impressive throws of the pitchers in perfect line. At the top of the third inning, Will Venable hit out to right-field and Adrian Gonzalez struck out swinging.
The pitchers were on top throughout the game as they controlled the scoring shots of the batters by maintaining their accuracy. Baker allowed just four hits and struck out 10 batters. He gave just one walk on his 115 pitches.
Baker commented on his feelings and said, “I think you can tell by his posture and by his mannerisms. I kind of knew he was going to talk to me and see how I was feeling in that situation. At the time it felt great.”
The Padres’ catcher, Nick Hundley was unable to contribute any run for his team and went 0-for-3. He commented on Bakers’ performance and said, “He's one of those guys you don't hear about a whole lot just because you're in the other league.”
It was the frustrating moment for the Padres’ manager, Bud Black as his team did not show an exemplary performance. Speaking to reporters, he said, “Our situational hitting hasn't been where it needs to be.”
Tim Stauffer pitched extremely well for the Padres as he threw seven innings with an ERA of 3.13 and gave only one run on six hits including one earned run. He struck-out five batters without permitting any walk on his 97 pitches. The Twins managed to hold
on and take the victory against the Padres.
