Scott Barr off to a strong start at the Omega European Masters
Australia’s Scott Barr fired a five-under par 66 in the opening round of the Omega European Masters, a co-sanctioned event by the Asian Tour and the European Tour, and shared the fourth spot, on Thursday, August 30, 2012.
Right from the start of the 2012 golf season, he has been playing inconsistently. Till date, he has played a total of 13 events and recorded three-top 15 finishes.
He also came close to his maiden Asian Tour victory at the SAIL-SBI Open early this year. However, a 71 in the final round was not enough to challenge the leader and he settled for the third position on the leaderboard.
In the meantime, he never finished better than a tied 27th position, in the rest of the tournaments that he played.
Therefore, consistency is a huge problem for the Singaporean resident. This week, he has once again made a strong start and plans to remain consistent in each of the final three rounds.
“I’ve been playing well in patches this season and I had the chance to win earlier in the year which didn’t quite come off,” said Barr. “It’s nice to play well but there’s still a long way to go. Hopefully I can get out there and play well again tomorrow”.
With strong showers of rain pouring down on the course, Barr opened his account with a birdie on the first hole. At the end of the front nine, he was two-under for the round, with the help of four birdies against two bogeys.
The back nine witnessed him play some better shots and he managed to sign his scorecard with a 32 in the end. In total, he carded three birdies on the final nine holes in regulation.
He credited his putter for a brilliant performance on day one and stated that he was working on his short game for the last few months.
“I was struggling earlier on in the day as we don’t play in these sort of conditions in Asia. But once I started to putt well, I began to get my confidence going,” said Barr.
“I’ve been working very hard with my putting at home and that’s starting to pay dividends. Hopefully it’ll pay off at the end of the week,” added Barr.
He currently trails the leader Gregory Bourdy by three strokes. Fredrik Andersson Hed and Oliver Fisher finished tied for the second position with a six-under par 65.
