Scott Brown secures his maiden PGA Tour title at the Puerto Rico Open
Scott Brown carded a two-under par 70, in the final round of the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com, to claim the first PGA Tour victory of his career, on Sunday, March 10, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at the Trump International Golf Club, offering a total prize fund of US$ 3.5 million, to the participants.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Brown maintained consistency in his game, and surged to the top of the leaderboard after carding a 13-under par score in the first two rounds.
He then added another good round to his scorecard, by recording a five-under par 67 in the third round. Entering the final round, he was sharing the lead with Fabian Gomez.
Entering the final hole, Gomez held a one-stroke lead over Brown, and was in perfect position to become the first Argentine to record a victory on the PGA Tour, since Angel Cabrera won the 2009 Masters.
However, it all went wrong for Gomez, as his second shot found a tough lie in the bunker. He then blasted his shot over the green, and found another bunker.
Then he missed a 15-foot par putt. Meanwhile, Brown was also standing on the green, with a birdie opportunity in hand. He drained the ball in for a birdie and surged past his rival on the leaderboard, to secure a two-year exemption on the tour. The victory
also earned him a place in The Players Championship and the PGA Championship.
“I thought I would need an eagle as well as he was playing," Brown said. "So I just stayed aggressive”.
“I was nervous over that last putt,” he added. A kid growing up in Augusta, this is “a dream come true”.
Gomez, on the other hand, was really disappointed in missing out the opportunity to record his maiden victory on the PGA Tour.
“On that final hole I hit a good drive off the tee, but followed that with a poor 3-iron and it cost me big,” Gomez said. “I had a very bad lie there and it was a difficult shot, and I was unable to pull it off. But that's golf. You never know what may happen”.
