Scott Clary claims Men’s 200m backstroke gold: Day two - Santa Clara International Grand Prix
Scott Clary of Fast Swim Team-C claimed gold medal of the Men’s 200m backstroke on day two of the 2012 Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California on Saturday, June 2.
Santa Clara is the final stop of seven-juncture 2012 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series that gives a chance to the international swimmers to compete with the best of USA in their exclusive events.
The 23-year-old Clary, who recently captured gold medal of the Men’s 400m Individual Medley, upset his challengers by snaring gold medal of the discipline.
He faced tough battle from Omar A Pinzon of Trojan Swim Club in the first lap of the race but elevated his efforts in the remaining laps and ensured his place on the podium for gold medal.
Pinzon dominated first lap of the event as he surfaced on the other end of the pool with the timing of 28.18 seconds while Clary posted a time of 28.23 seconds.
The situation reversed in the second lap, where Clary gained lead over his opponent and completed his first half of the swim with the timing of 57.80 seconds.
With his fascinating effort, he remained 1.04 seconds faster from Pinzon, who remained prominent for second position of the discipline by posting a time of 58.84 seconds.
Third lap of the swim was also overpowered by Clary, who extended his lead to two body lengths by posting a time of 1 minute and 27.86 seconds.
Subsequently, the 22-year-old Pinzon stayed 2.04 seconds apart and completed his 150 metres of the swim with the timing of 1 minute and 29.90 seconds.
Clary continued his remarkable pace in the final lap and tapped the finishing wall for gold medal with the timing of 1 minute and 57.90 seconds.
The champion was trailed by Pinzon, who finished second in the 200m event by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 00.49 seconds.
Third position of the event was secured by James A Lendrum of Trojan Swim Club, who posted 2 minutes and 01.26 seconds.
Furthermore, the position holders received medals and accolades for their exhausting efforts after the session.
