Scott Evans beats Tony Stephenson in final round of 2013 Irish National Championships
Men’s Singles shuttler Scott Evans remained invincible in the final round of Irish National Championships and claimed the crown on Sunday, February 3, 2013.
He outclassed Tony Stephenson in the title match which was played at the local badminton complex of Lisburn.
Though, both compatriot shuttlers were almost equal in the first set but then Scott Evans employed his brilliance in the second game and sealed a straight-set victory with 21-17 and 21-8 margin.
The top seeded player of this tournament proved his dominance through a splendid display of badminton craft and earned great deal of admiration.
He showed his intentions straight away in the beginning of first set by pocketing couple of vital points without any interruption.
This intensive attack pushed Tony on the back foot and he could not proceed on points table in next couple of rallies.
Meanwhile, Scott injected more intensity in his attack and widened the gap with few consecutive points.
He capitalised this initial advantage and finished first half of the set with a respectable score position.
After the mid-game break, he gathered some pace and left his challengers far behind on the points table.
Though, Tony made every effort to counterbalance the situation but his fluctuated performance proved the biggest hurdle in his way to success.
He prevailed in couple of successive rallies but then few back-to-back mistakes in third quarter of the set jeopardised his stakes.
Scott Evans made best out of his rival’s blunders and wrapped this segment of the showdown with an impressive result of 21-17.
The following game was completely a one-sided affair as Tony hardly put any resistance and surrendered tamely.
The first sign of trouble came for him when he failed to withstand a flurry of power packed strokes in the beginning.
Scott Evans did not show mercy at any stage of the game and kept his competitor at the lower end. He strengthened his grip with a mountainous figure of 11 and then served notice of his supremacy with an overwhelming total of 21-8.
With this win, he earned the right to clutch Men’s Singles trophy in Irish National Championships.
